The course is offered by Roger Mundry, Leibniz ScienceCampus.
CONTENT: Linear models represent a flexible framework allowing the analysis of the effects of one or several (quantitative or qualitative) predictors on a single response (which can be, e.g., continuous, a count, or binary). As such they encompass, for instance, linear regression, the t-tests, ANOVA, ANCOVA, the Generalized Linear Model (e.g., logistic, Poisson, zero-inflated, or negative binomial models), and Mixed (a.k.a. multi-level) Models. Hence, linear models allow to address a huge variety of questions with various types of data, using a unified conceptual and statistical framework.
In the course I treat all the above, that is linear models from simple regression to the Generalized Linear Mixed Model (GLMM). I begin with simple linear regression and then explain how this concept can be extended to model the impact of multiple predictors, categorical predictors, interactions, and certain non- linear relationships (i.e., the 'general linear model'). Then I proceed with introducing how the general linear model can be expanded to the 'Generalized Linear Model' (e.g., logistic, Poisson, zero-inflated, or negative binomial regression). Finally I treat the (Generalized) Linear Mixed Model (i.e., models allowing the inclusion of grouping variables or 'random effects'). Further lessons will be devoted to a brief introduction to non-linear models, how to formulate scientifically meaningful models, and perhaps information theory based as well as multi model inference.
Throughout the course I put much emphasis on the conceptual meaning and interpretation of the models rather than on their 'mechanics' (i.e., the mathematical background). Practically this means that we shall devote quite some time to understanding what such models reveal about 'life' (i.e., the process investigated) and particularly to understanding and interpreting interactions. In fact, I consider it an important component of the course to try teaching how models and 'life' are linked, i.e., how one can put hypotheses and questions about life into models and what these then can (and cannot) reveal about it.
The course is mainly centred around a null-hypothesis significance testing framework, largely because this still is the by far most frequently used approach. However, if time allows I shall also explain the concept of information theory based inference (and we might also practically apply it). Furthermore, the models themselves, i.e., how they are set up with regard to, for instance, interactions, fixed and random effects, random slopes, error and link function, their meaning, interpretation (and limitations), are unaffected by the philosophy used to draw statistical inference.
STRUCTURE: The course consists of roughly (regularly interspersed) 50% theory and 50% practical applications during which we shall work ourselves through various models. As part of that, participants will also learn how to plot the results of the models treated and how to describe them in the methods and results sections of a paper. Finally, I put much emphasis on assumptions and model diagnostics and how to evaluate them.
Voraussetzungen:
REQUIREMENTS: The course requires some familiarity with general ideas/concepts of statistics and also the basic concepts of R. Regarding the former, you should have some experience with applied statistics, and be somewhat familiar with things like null-hypothesis significance-testing, 'error level', etc. Regarding the latter, you should have some experience with R, for instance, knowing how to read a file into it and run some simple tests (e.g., t-test, ANOVA, or non- parametric tests) and create simple plots. Regarding R, a couple of weeks before the course begins I'll make available two tutorials giving a general introduction to R and an introduction to plotting in R, and participants are expected to have a serious look at these (total of ca. 100 pages) before the course begins.
The individual lessons of the course build heavily upon one another. Hence, it is a requirement that every participant attends throughout and all of them (missing even just a few hours may make it very hard to catch up later). Also, it probably pays a lot to invest extra time to go through the treated material again and the exercises I may provide. Hence, I strongly advise to keep these three weeks as free of other obligations as possible (particularly participants who are not somewhat familiar with linear models should consider this). Given the potentially limited space and that participants need to prepare in advance, it is mandatory to sign up for this course (see above). When signing up, please be aware that we consider this a binding statement that you plan to participate.
Organisatorisches:
WHEN & WHERE: The course will be given online and takes place during the three weeks from Monday June 7, 2021, to Friday June 25, 2021, with lessons taking place each workday (Monday to Friday) from 09:00 (sharp) to ca. 15:30 CEST with a couple of short breaks in between and also a longer lunch break of ca. 45 minutes.
CREDITS: Certificates of participation are accepted to fulfil credit requirements of the PhD programme Behavior and Cognition as well as the GGNB programmes (for GGNB, 4.5C are given). A regular attendance is required. Students of other PhD programmes should inquire with the heads of their study programmes regarding credits.
LANGUAGE: the course language will be English.
SIGNING UP: by sending an email to statistics_teaching@dpz.eu; when registering, include your full name, affiliation, status (faculty member/PostDoc/PhD, Master) and study programme (if applicable). You can register between April 12 and May 2, 2021. People signing up later cannot be considered. Due to the priority regulations (see below), signing up does not imply that you can participate. Everyone who signed up will receive an email soon after May 2, stating whether s/he can participate.
BEFORE YOU SIGN UP: please be aware that the course requires a more or less full time commitment for three entire weeks. Please sign up only if you will be definitely able to participate (given no major unexpected events). 'No shows' and late sign-outs will have reduced priority of access in future rounds of the course; GGNB and GAUSS doctoral students will be banned from all skills and methods courses and funding options for 12 months.
PRIORITY OF ACCESS: there is a limited number of slots available, and in case more people sign up for the course than can participate, priority of access is given to first, members of the Leibniz ScienceCampus Primate Cognition, second, staff, members, and students of the University of Goettingen and the German Primate Center, and finally (third), to everyone else. Within each group priority of access is given in the order in which people have signed up. Finally, in future rounds of the course people that have signed up for this round but then signed out again or just didn't appear might get lower priority.
Zielgruppe:
TARGETED AUDIENCE: The targeted audience is not limited to students, but also faculty members, post docs, etc. are welcome to attend.

Workshop description
During the first two half-days, we cover the following: basic writing style; refining your style; being concise and correct (including scientifically relevant grammar and punctuation issues); writing manuscripts and abstracts; and preparing figures and tables.
During the third half-day, we discuss planning, revising and proofreading your work, and consider the publication process: authorship, journal selection, submission and peer review.
Using the Zoom platform, this workshop comprises short lectures, exercises, brainstorming in breakout rooms and an open invitation to ask questions, express opinion and share experience.
Comments about workshops by John Dixon from participants:
- Dr. Dixon did an excellent job as an instructor. The handouts were extremely helpful and handy. I would definitely recommend this course to my peers.
-
This workshop has by far been the best I"ve ever attended as a PhD student. The trainer was extremely engaging and presented the material with such enthusiasm. I learned a lot from this workshop, from writing scientifically to abstract/poster/presentations. Loved it - highly recommended!
-
John is a great, charming and very sensible teacher and definitely knows what he is talking about. He definitely showed the enthusiasm during the course he was mentioning to be the key element. The handouts/exercises were brilliant, in a simple and straightforward way. The glossary on writing may become invaluable important for future manuscripts.
-
The workshop is exactly what is supposed to be: Training on scientific communication. The instructor was excellently prepared and was able to adapt to the audience"s needs. I would definitely recommend it to anyone working in the science field.
-
John is an excellent teacher and in addition to being really informative, the course was a lot of fun. Definitely recommendable.
-
John is very experienced and it is more fun and relevant given that he has a scientific background. Strongly enjoyed these 3 days and will recommend this course to my peers.
-
John is using magic tricks for PhD students to artistically open up. Very rare, very useful. I think that"s what we all, as scientists, lack.
-
Very competent and lovely trainer; it was a lot of fun! He provides a plenty of material that I will definetly use later in my scientific career.

Objective
Integral to voice and body training is the central idea that physical and vocal dynamics are connected to the speaker's motivation and to the importance of the information being communicated. Trainers with professional
theatre backgrounds identify the verbal challenges of each speaker, giving attention to breath, articulation,
intonation, volume, modulation and tempo. Coaching is given to improve non-verbal aspects such as gesture,
positioning, distance, eye contact and relationship with media.
Participants monitor their improvement and implement feedback with active role-play exercises in which they
present in various scenarios such as academic presentation to a large and small audience, informal meetings,
interviews and teaching situations.
Contents
- Intensive exercises to identify vocal and physical inhibitions
- Strengthen and release tension in the voice and body
- Identify the dynamics between the voice and body by connecting the upper and lower hemispheres of the body
- Make conscious vocal choices in the delivery of the presentation to communicate each idea with clarity and precision
- Use eye contact to make points and to underline key ideas with fluid gestures
- Explore a dynamic use of space and how to construct an architecture of ideas in the space
- Adopt strategies to use the potential of the technical equipment and physical objects
Methods
- Physical and vocal exercises
- Group coaching with individual support
- Role-play activities
Testimonials:
- I got a lot of insights as well as straight forward, practical tips which I will be able to use in my next presentations. The workshop kept a good balance between dense input and practical exercises.
- Julie is an enthusiastic trainer, who is fully committed to improving and supporting our presentation skills. The workshop has many useful hands-on exercises, and although the videotaping of the talk may seem scary, it helped me a lot.
- Offered everything I could hope for: helpful tips for real-life situations, targeted feedback about approaching live presenting. Would recommend whole-heartedly.

An occupation in research and teaching, a career in the economic or service sector or in a non-profit organisation - after the doctorate there are numerous professional fields and career paths open on the international labour market.
Because of this, strategic career planning is necessary. A series of important questions has to be answered: What are my goals and interests, what are my strengths and weaknesses? Where can I apply? Do I know what is expected of me and how to present myself?
On the basis of these questions the current application standards are conveyed and individual application strategies are worked out. With the help of selected examples from practice, the participants develop the competencies needed for a successful approach to the application process. The workshop deals in particular with the following topics:
- My qualification profile: How do I show my potential?
- Alma mater forever? Possibilities within and outside academia
- Clarification of my goals: What exactly do I know already, what is unclear?
- The labour market: Desirable and realistic career pathways
- Before the application: Strategies & stumbling blocks
- Networking & self-marketing: Building contacts
- Career strategies: My next steps
Comments by former participants:
- This workshop gives some nice hands-on tips on how to step into the job market after having finished the doctorate. The trainer is friendly, direct and has a lot of expertise for the content. He included several motivating and stimulating phrases in his theoretic content.

Goal: Getting to know about professional perspectives in public and private sectors and reflecting about own suitability to different career paths; setting the direction of one`s professional future by developing specific skills during the PhD project;
The workshop deals with what career means and which personal career objectives matter. Participants are introduced to different science-related career paths in the public sector (including universities, but not restricted to) and private enterprises, and which technical and personal skills matter, respectively. Moreover, participants get the opportunity to reflect their own competences and objectives as well as their suitability to these different career paths. Finally, participants develop an individual strategy to prepare their next career steps.
Comments by former participants:
- Good starting point for career planning
- Showed perspectives both inside and outside of academia.
- Helpful to get impression on job chances. Broad overview on job chances for PhDs. Very good trainer.
A new way to see the options after the PhD. There are more opportunities than expected. It also offers a new look at yourself and your potentials.
- Dr. Gaby Schilling did not only gave valuable insights into different career options in academia and industry, but she also encouraged us to think about other aspects that play a role in finding a suitable job like free time activities, other (non-)professional skills and our personality. It was very interesting and I would recommend this course for sure. Thank you very much!
- The workshoped thaught me to reevaluate my skills and find confidence in them.
- This was one of the most useful workshops that I have attended! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to get familiar with the career options that are there and how one could find the right one for him/her.

What is "intercultural communication"?
Intercultural communication looks at a very few key cultural concepts (e.g. fact-based vs. relationship-based interpersonal interactions, individual vs. group orientation, the role of hierarchy, to name a few) and how these in their various constellations impact the communication behaviour of different cultures in every-day problem-solving, decision-making, project-planning, workplace interaction, etc. It is not about compiling simplified do's and don'ts checklists for specific countries.
Nor is it about coming up with the "correct" interpretation of every cross-cultural situation. In realistic, functional terms, intercultural communication skills enable one to first distinguish which problems encountered by workgroups are in fact cultural communication problems, rather than issues of individual personality or technical competence. In the case of a multicultural group, isolating and understanding the impact of key cultural issues on group dynamics puts one in a position to make a reasonable assessment of a situation and take the steps of effective action.
How do scientific and technical professionals benefit from intercultural communication skills?
The predominance of foreign students and professionals in scientific and technical programmes throughout the world means that many universities and research institutions are host to some of the most culturally diverse work teams one is likely to encounter. Within such organisations where cultural differences can be quite pronounced and rather the norm, the effectiveness of the workgroup may well hinge on the complete skills package of certain key persons; for instance, persons working in positions where they need to influence others or co-ordinate the work of others to achieve specific objectives. Given this reality, intercultural communication skills must be more than just "something extra": they are the key to accessing the full synergistic potential within a multicultural group.
Experienced managers, engineers and other internationally active professionals consistently recognise the considerable barriers posed by cultural differences, and the challenge posed to overcome them. Given this reality, it is not inconceivable that intercultural communication awareness and skills development are equally relevant and challenging as a central issue for students of all disciplines.
How can intercultural communication skills be trained?
The models and tools delivered here are conceptualised to help start the long process the learner must undertake to construct and refine his/her own cultural model through research, experience, observation and objective analysis. The workshop, therefore, trains participants in transferring their understanding of patterns of "cultural logic" into an ability to recognise and assess reasonably accurately cultural patterns of communication behaviour, which in turn enables informed action and solutions. Using typical, authentic case studies, real-life samples for group problem-solving activities, and role-play simulations, the strength of the design of this workshop, especially with regards to professional or academic user groups, lies in its integration of the relevant academic knowledge into a solid conceptual framework that is taught with an applications-oriented approach specifically tailored to the user's needs.

Being good is not good enough. You also need to make sure that other people know that you are good. You only will get praise, appreciation and promotion if your environment and your boss know about your work, your efforts, your capabilities and your success stories. Therefore you need to present yourself in a convincing but also authentic way. This requires first some analysis, e.g.: what are your strengths, where do you show outstanding know-how and capabilities, what values do you stand for. Secondly, based on this analysis you can start to develop an authentic self-presentation which you will feel comfortable with. We will discuss and train the most important rules for successful self-presentation, how to avoid negative self-presentation, how to make a good impression and how to make sure that your strengths and capabilities and your efforts are seen by your boss and environment.
The training gives you the theoretical framework for successful self-presentation but will focus on specific exercises. We will practice as well the "elevator speech" as a dialogue situation, e.g. asking your boss for something. We will look into the effects of body language and voice and language. We will also discuss what you can do in difficult situations or if somebody has stolen your ideas or your merits.
To make one thing clear: Without good work even the best self-presentation will quickly be identified as just hot air without any substance. But without good self-presentation you might be just like an uncut diamond. Good self-presentation is like cutting a diamond so that everybody can see how brilliant you are.
