NOTE: attendance of a seminar on Good Scientific Practice is mandatory for all GAUSS (incl. GGNB) doctoral students!

First, we will discuss some cases of scientific misconduct and the motivation of the respective cheaters. Then, appropriate and inappropriate means of handling, processing, and displaying scientific data will be discussed (e.g. sampling and statistics, image processing), with examples of "borderline" cases being presented. Then we come to the question of proper data management and long term storage of data and to the importance of keeping lab books properly. Finally, we discuss the issue of authorships.

Finally, you will be familiarized with the rules of Good Scientific Practice enacted by various organizations (University, Max-Planck-Society, DFG) and we will discuss what to do and how to act in cases where there is suspicion or evidence for scientific misconduct.

Goal: Getting to know about professional perspectives in public and private sectors and reflecting about own suitability to different career paths; setting the direction of one`s professional future by developing specific skills during the PhD project;

The workshop deals with what career means and which personal career objectives matter. Participants are introduced to different science-related career paths in the public sector (including universities, but not restricted to) and private enterprises, and which technical and personal skills matter, respectively. Moreover, participants get the opportunity to reflect their own competences and objectives as well as their suitability to these different career paths. Finally, participants develop an individual strategy to prepare their next career steps.

Comments by former participants:

  • Good starting point for career planning
  • Showed perspectives both inside and outside of academia.
  • Helpful to get impression on job chances. Broad overview on job chances for PhDs. Very good trainer.
A new way to see the options after the PhD. There are more opportunities than expected. It also offers a new look at yourself and your potentials.
  • Dr. Gaby Schilling did not only gave valuable insights into different career options in academia and industry, but she also encouraged us to think about other aspects that play a role in finding a suitable job like free time activities, other (non-)professional skills and our personality. It was very interesting and I would recommend this course for sure. Thank you very much!
  • The workshoped thaught me to reevaluate my skills and find confidence in them.
  • This was one of the most useful workshops that I have attended! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to get familiar with the career options that are there and how one could find the right one for him/her.

Navigating difficult seas: Conflict management

Nobody wants to have conflicts: they are stressful and should be avoided. But conflict competence is a key aspect of professionalism and success. This workshop challenges popular views of conflict and presents a positive understanding of conflictive processes. It brings participants in contact with their already existing resources for conflict solving and shows how to use these actively to influence difficult situations positively. Furthermore, it is discussed how to address conflicts in a constructive manner and how to communicate and act professional when in conflict.

Conflicts in research organisations are manifold: e.g. between members of different status groups (administration vs. research personnel, technical assistant vs. PhD candidates), the delimitation one"s own (research) interests, dealing with competitive situations or the negotiation of working conditions. The formal and informal (evaluation) interdependency between conflict parties also plays an important role. Group (e.g. gender) specific attributions on conflict behaviour can also influence conflict dynamics.

How to develop a clear, goal oriented conflict behaviour that at the same time is respectful? The workshop provides a platform to discuss and try out different strategies taking examples and individual experiences of the participants into account.

Content in Brief

  • The basics conflict management
  • Conflict analysis, handling and consequences
  • Conflict and escalation dynamics
  • Discovery and professional use of individual solution resources
  • Professional communication in difficult situations
  • Dealing with hierarchy and dependence

Workshop description

During the first half-day, we consider what makes effective and attractive posters and slides. For both, we critique examples and consider the balance of relevant text, visuals and white space. We discuss fonts, colour, alignment and more…but this not a highly technical PowerPoint clinic!

During the second half-day, we deal with oral presentations. We cover how to handle nerves, rehearsing, keeping to time, voice and body language, and handling questions. We critique a well-known orator to get some tips. You then have an opportunity to give a short presentation of around three minutes, accompanied by no more than six slides. You will receive constructive feedback on your delivery (but not on technical content) from other participants and the trainer.

Using the Zoom platform, this workshop comprises short lectures, brainstorming in breakout rooms, ample opportunity for discussion and an open invitation to ask questions, express opinion and share experience.

A note for those who are worried about giving an oral presentation!

Every participant will be giving a presentation, but you will be in a "safe" environment! It will be OK to be nervous, OK to forget what you were going to say, OK to receive constructive criticism, OK to give constructive criticism - it won"t matter and everyone will be in the same situation. It"s your opportunity to "have a go" at presenting, receive feedback and learn from others. The idea is to enjoy and have some fun!

Comments on workshops by John Dixon from the participants:

  • Dr. Dixon did an excellent job as an instructor. The handouts were extremely helpful and handy. I would definitely recommend this course to my peers.
  • This workshop has by far been the best I"ve ever attended as a PhD student. The trainer (Dr. John Dixon) was extremely engaging and presented the material with such enthusiasm. I learned a lot from this workshop, from writing scientifically to abstract/poster/presentations. Loved it - highly recommended!

  • John is a great, charming and very sensible teacher and definitely knows what he is talking about. He definitely showed the enthusiasm during the course he was mentioning to be the key element. The handouts/exercises were brilliant, in a simple and straightforward way. The glossary on writing may become invaluable important for future manuscripts.

  • John is an excellent teacher and in addition to being really informative, the course was a lot of fun. Definitely recommendable.

  • John is very experienced and it is more fun and relevant given that he has a scientific background. Strongly enjoyed these 3 days and will recommend this course to my peers.

  • John is using magic tricks for PhD students to artistically open up. Very rare, very useful. I think that"s what we all, as scientists, lack.

  • Very competent and lovely trainer; it was a lot of fun! He provides a plenty of material that I will definetly use later in my scientific career.

Course description:

Scientists have to give arguments in many different contexts: in their publications, in grant applications, in lab meetings and in conference presentations. Nevertheless, the bases for strong and correct arguments are not always fully clear to them. Logic provides extremely helpful tools for scientists to develop their arguments in a coherent, well-structured and convincing way. The course introduces the most important concepts of logic:
premises and conclusions of arguments, validity and soundness of arguments, deductive vs. inductive reasoning, common types of inferences and fallacies. The idea of the course is to use these concepts as a toolbox which provides useful techniques for everyday scientific work. The participants learn how to reconstruct arguments from scientific texts, how to give well-structured and logically valid arguments, and how to avoid misunderstandings.

Participants will:

  • get to know the fundamental concepts of logic
(validity, soundness, standard form, fallacies etc.)
  • learn to quickly identify the strengths and weaknesses of arguments
  • learn how to break arguments down into their logical structure
  • learn how to give well-structured and convincing arguments (written and orally)
  • practice analytical-thinking skills

Testimonials:

  • Really useful course. Highly recommended.
  • The course helps to realize the structure of arguments in texts and to clarify your own arguments. It is enlightening to understand which part of texts actually contains "the argument".
  • Teaches critical way of thinking and debating.
  • This workshop helped me grasp the importance of forming a valid and sound argument, both in discussions and written work. Furthermore, it helped me understand how to analyse arguments and identify fallacies and how to handle them. The trainer did everything to make sure we understood the material, I thoroughly recommend this workshop.
  • This course gave me tools to structure arguments so that they are easily understood by others. I believe this course is ideal for someone who is writing a paper or preparing his/her thesis defense.
  • Jonas was a great teacher, highly dedicated to his job and the webinar was very entertaining and informative. Will be useful for the PhD defense and the dissertation writing process!

Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) has emerged as one of the most sensitive and powerful techniques for a rigorous thermodynamic characterization of biomolecular interactions such as protein-protein or protein-ligand interactions. Thus far, ITC is the only technique that determines directly the key thermodynamic parameters of a given interaction including the dissociation constant KD, the Gibbs free energy of binding ΔG and its individual enthalpic (ΔH) and entropic contributions (ΔS), the stoichiometry n and the heat capacity Δcp.

This course is aimed to provide the theoretical background of microcalorimetry as well as practical training for planning and performing ITC experiments. The binding interaction of several binding partners as well as steady state-kinetics will be thermodynamically studied by the participants using the most advanced isothermal titration microcalorimeter iTC200 manufactured by Microcal.

First a theoretical introduction is given about genetically encoded redox biosensors and their application in the life sciences. Second, in the practical part we will mainly focus on the protocol for isolation of cardiomyocytes from adult mouse heart by Langendorff´s perfusion system followed by the redox measurements required to obtain the glutathione redox potential (EGSH) using the Grx1-roGFP2 biosensor. The possible applications of this sensor model along with the associated limitations will also be discussed along with the experimental demonstration of the technique.

Metabolite fingerprinting is a comprehensive and comparative non-targeted metabolomics approach. It aims to describe biological processes on the metabolite level and to identify metabolites or even pathways as biomarker of environmental, developmental or genetic perturbation. This course will give a short theoretical introduction into the strategy of metabolite marker identification and the principles of liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS).

Hands-on work will be done on the following steps of the non-targeted metabolomics approach:

  • Extraction of the metabolites from biological samples
  • Data acquisition by LC-HRMS
  • Generation of comprehensive metabolome data matrixes
  • Data processing and identification of metabolite markers (supported by the software tool MarVis)
  • Verification of the structure of metabolite markers by LC-HRMS/MS analysis

Next generation sequencing methods deliver an overwhelming amount of sequence data, which needs to be processed with bioinformatics software. Many software packages are available and they can be divided into expensive programs with a graphical user interface and freeware that is run from the command line. We will assemble and analyze raw NGS data with professional software (CLC genomics workbench) and will work with command line tools to learn linux and python basics. Practice in NGS data handling and basics of bioinformatic analysis will be gained. The course is mainly aimed at students who work on biodiversity, systematics and evolution of different organismal lineages, but is also open for students from other disciplines.

An ever-increasing amount of biological events can be recorded by means of micro- or nanoscopy. The resulting image-based data can be visualized and quantified with a growing array of open source software. A well-designed experiment may yield spatiotemporal information regarding events taking place at the organismal, cellular or molecular level. A proper evaluation thereof requires understanding of what an image is, how it was generated and what subsequent processing methods may be available. A major aim of the course is to make participants aware of resources they can use to educate themselves toward successful experimental design, image acquisition and analysis.

The underlying motivation for the course is the visualization and quantification of biological events based on microscope-generated images. The freely available "ImageJ" (http://rsbweb.nih.gov/ij/) and its "FIJI" variant (http://fiji.sc) will be introduced towards this goal. First, the components of an image will be discussed, as well as the frequently used image types within their appropriate context. Basic concepts such as lookup tables, image calibration or the creation of multi-channel (overlay) images will be explained along with several standard situations that a microscope user is faced with on the road toward publication. Examples of basic image arithmetic and further image processing related to image stacks (i.e. time series) and 3D reconstruction will be introduced. More advanced topics will include the modification of ImageJ installs to suit the respective need. A third of the course will be dedicated to the ImageJ macro/programming language with the goal to automatically process and quantify a large amount of images. Other open source alternatives, such as "Cell Profiler" (http://cellprofiler.org/) or "ilastik" (http://ilastik.org/) will be introduced briefly.

Students attending the course may in advance suggest related topics they wish to have covered.  IMPORTANT: The course aims to give students without experience in image processing a way to enter the field.

In this course, basics of different microscopy and super-resolution techniques will be covered, with main focus on single molecule localization based super-resolution microscopy. Two of the most important techniques, dSTORM and DNA-PAINT, will be introduced. While dSTORM is more established and easier to implement, DNA-PAINT is a rapidly developing and versatile technique, capable of reaching superior resolution of single nanometers. Recent developments in cellular DNA-PAINT enable to exploit the full potential of DNA-PAINT for multiplexed imaging of fixed cells, then contributing to understanding of cell organelles organization and interplay. Advantages, limitations and further optimization of DNA-PAINT will be discussed.

Course duration: two days. The course will include lecture/seminar/detailed overview of the experimental setup/experiment/data analysis. Following topics will be covered:

-          super-resolution techniques overview

Immunofluorescence techniques are a useful tool to analyze not only intra- and intercellular but also subcellular localization. This is of specific importance to identify e.g. specific autoimmune diseases or epidermal barrier disruption.

On the subcellular level, staining of inter- and intracellular structures and signaling proteins allows detection of transcription factor activity, cytoskeletal rearrangements or protein expression changes in response to different stimuli.

Following an introduction into histology of the skin, keratinocytes (2D and 3D) will be analyzed regarding their expression and proliferation/ differentiation characteristics, followed by fluorescence microscopy analysis and respective evaluation strategies.

To study synaptic transmission mechanisms, my lab takes advantage of the single cell autaptic neuron culture system. This model system is ideally suitable for understanding the most important parameters underlying synaptic communication in a quantitative fashion. It is unique, as all synapses originate from a single axon. Thus different synaptic release modes can be quantified.

Step 1. Preparing autaptic neuron cultures

The autaptic preparation is defined by a single neuron that resides on an island of astrocytes with limited size, called a microisland culture. First, course participants will learn how the micoisland astrocyte culture is made and developed. Second, course participants will learn how to grow single neurons on the astrocyte islands. The applicants will learn to dissociate neurons from target areas of the mouse brain and to culture them on the astrocyte feeder culture.

Step 2. Measuring evoked synaptic transmission in autaptic cultures

In autaptic neuron cultures, all synapses that contact to the dendrite of the neuron are formed by a single axon of the same neuron. Thus, all synapses can be stimulated to release transmitter at once by brief somatic depolarization. To understand the evoked synaptic responses, my lab uses a basic application of the patch clamp technique. Course participants will learn the basics of the measurement and quantification of synaptic responses in autaptic neuron cultures.

This course is intended for students who want to explore projects concerned with synaptic function in neurons.

This lecture course offers an introduction to advanced modeling strategies for biological neural networks. After a short introduction to the biophysics of single cells and an overview of their basic firing patterns, we explain fundamental properties of networks models of neurons, starting from simple uniform connectivity and progressing to spatially extended and to arbitrarily complex interaction networks. These network models explain and predict key dynamical aspects of neural circuits, including irregular activity of cortical dynamics, feature selectivity, self-organization of neural maps, and the coordination of precisely timed spikes across networks.

The summer term course has its focus on neural field models.

Kommentar:

This combined lecture and hands-on computer tutorial is the continuation of the lecture "Theoretical and Computational Biophysics" (usually taking place in the previous winter term) and offers the possibility to deepen the knowledge about theory and computer simulations of biomolecular systems, particularly proteins. During the exercises, the knowledge presented in the lecture is applied to practical examples to further deepen and strengthen the understanding. By completing homework sets, which are distributed after each lecture, additional aspects of the addressed topics during the lecture shall be worked out. The homework sets are collected during the corresponding exercises.

Whereas the lecture "Theoretical and Computational Biophysics" emphasized the principles of running and analyzing simple atomistic force field-based simulations, this advanced course will broaden our view and introduce concepts and methods particularly required to understand biomolecular function, namely thermodynamic quantities such as free energies and affinities. Further, inclusion of quantum mechanical simulation techniques will allow to also simulate chemical reactions, e.g., in enzymes.

The following topics will be introduced and further discussed:  Quantum mechanical methods, Hartree-Fock and Density Functional Theory, Rate Theory, Non-equilibrium thermodynamics, Charge transfer and photosynthesis, Free energy calculations.

Reduced-representation methods allow genome wide detection of genetic markers without sequencing the whole genome. Restriction-digest methods (RADseq, GBS), RNAseq, Chloroplast sequencing and amplicon sequencing are the most common reduced-representation methods. We will analyze a RADseq dataset using the python-based program pyRAD and we will use this dataset and a RNAseq dataset for phylogenetic reconstruction and compare the results with phylogenetic studies based on Sanger sequencing. Case studies of all four groups of methods will be discussed.

Molecular dynamics simulations are a method to describe the dynamics of macro-molecules such as proteins, lipids or synthetic polymers. The movement of every atom is calculated on a computer by numerically integrating Newton's equations of motion.

This course aims to introduce the fundamental methods to you. Therefore, you are going to simulate a short polymer chain, a "toy-model" that behaves similarly to a small protein. The steps necessary to set up a simulation system will be performed. Subsequently, you will be introduced to the analysis methods, e. g. the calculation of structural order parameters, interaction energies, and free energy profiles.

Neuroscientists often employ computational and statistical methods to analyse the structure of neuronal spike trains and their relation to sensory stimuli. In this course, we will introduce basic methods for analysing recorded neural data (including spike trains and voltage traces) with the programming language Python. The course will also include a brief introduction to Python, so no prior programming experience is required.

We will work on data recorded in our lab from retinal ganglion cells of mice and/or salamanders under visual stimulation. Through explanations and practical exercises, we will explore how to load, visualise and process recorded data to infer the tuning and filtering characteristics of neurons. Topics include the computation of firing rate profiles, auto- and cross-correlations, spike-triggered averages, tuning curves, and detection of particular cell classes (e.g. direction-selective cells). Participants will be guided to tackle analysis problems of varying difficulty, depending on their background in computer programming and data analysis.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own data; the end of the course will be dedicated to helping the participants apply the acquired techniques and start working with Python in their own projects.

Voraussetzungen:

If course can take place on site, computers will be provided, but we also encourage participants to bring their own laptop computers with a working version of Python installed. If course is online, participants will need to use their own computers.

Rheology is widely used to study the flow behaviour and deformation of materials.

In this two-day course, the students will acquire basic knowledge about rheology of viscoelastic liquids and solids. The training includes formulation of viscoelastic PDMS liquids, gels, and elastomers in a designated PDMS preparation laboratory (other materials of interest can be chosen upon request). Students will learn that the softness of PDMS sample changes according to the cross-linking ratio.

Next, the students will gain hands-on experience on operation of a rheometer. With a commercial state of the rheometer software, they will learn how to set different physical conditions (temperature, angular frequency, shear rate, etc) during the rheometer measurement.

This will be followed by determining the viscoelastic properties (e.g. Storage modulus, loss modulus, and viscosity) of the previously formulated PDMS gels by using the above-mentioned software.

The participants do not need any specific previous knowledge to attend the course.

The course is offered by Roger Mundry, Leibniz ScienceCampus.

CONTENT: Linear models represent a flexible framework allowing the analysis of the effects of one or several (quantitative or qualitative) predictors on a single response (which can be, e.g., continuous, a count, or binary). As such they encompass, for instance, linear regression, the t-tests, ANOVA, ANCOVA, the Generalized Linear Model (e.g., logistic, Poisson, zero-inflated, or negative binomial models), and Mixed (a.k.a. multi-level) Models. Hence, linear models allow to address a huge variety of questions with various types of data, using a unified conceptual and statistical framework.

In the course I treat all the above, that is linear models from simple regression to the Generalized Linear Mixed Model (GLMM). I begin with simple linear regression and then explain how this concept can be extended to model the impact of multiple predictors, categorical predictors, interactions, and certain non- linear relationships (i.e., the 'general linear model'). Then I proceed with introducing how the general linear model can be expanded to the 'Generalized Linear Model' (e.g., logistic, Poisson, zero-inflated, or negative binomial regression). Finally I treat the (Generalized) Linear Mixed Model (i.e., models allowing the inclusion of grouping variables or 'random effects'). Further lessons will be devoted to a brief introduction to non-linear models, how to formulate scientifically meaningful models, and perhaps information theory based as well as multi model inference.

Throughout the course I put much emphasis on the conceptual meaning and interpretation of the models rather than on their 'mechanics' (i.e., the mathematical background). Practically this means that we shall devote quite some time to understanding what such models reveal about 'life' (i.e., the process investigated) and particularly to understanding and interpreting interactions.  In fact, I consider it an important component of the course to try teaching how models and 'life' are linked, i.e., how one can put hypotheses and questions about life into models and what these then can (and cannot) reveal about it.

The course is mainly centred around a null-hypothesis significance testing framework, largely because this still is the by far most frequently used approach. However, if time allows I shall also explain the concept of information theory based inference (and we might also practically apply it). Furthermore, the models themselves, i.e., how they are set up with regard to, for instance, interactions, fixed and random effects, random slopes, error and link function, their meaning, interpretation (and limitations), are unaffected by the philosophy used to draw statistical inference.

STRUCTURE: The course consists of roughly (regularly interspersed) 50% theory and 50% practical applications during which we shall work ourselves through various models. As part of that, participants will also learn how to plot the results of the models treated and how to describe them in the methods and results sections of a paper. Finally, I put much emphasis on assumptions and model diagnostics and how to evaluate them.

Voraussetzungen:

REQUIREMENTS: The course requires some familiarity with general ideas/concepts of statistics and also the basic concepts of R. Regarding the former, you should have some experience with applied statistics, and be somewhat familiar with things like null-hypothesis significance-testing, 'error level', etc. Regarding the latter, you should have some experience with R, for instance, knowing how to read a file into it and run some simple tests (e.g., t-test, ANOVA, or non- parametric tests) and create simple plots. Regarding R, a couple of weeks before the course begins I'll make available two tutorials giving a general introduction to R and an introduction to plotting in R, and participants are expected to have a serious look at these (total of ca. 100 pages) before the course begins.

The individual lessons of the course build heavily upon one another. Hence, it is a requirement that every participant attends throughout and all of them (missing even just a few hours may make it very hard to catch up later). Also, it probably pays a lot to invest extra time to go through the treated material again and the exercises I may provide. Hence, I strongly advise to keep these three weeks as free of other obligations as possible (particularly participants who are not somewhat familiar with linear models should consider this). Given the potentially limited space and that participants need to prepare in advance, it is mandatory to sign up for this course (see above). When signing up, please be aware that we consider this a binding statement that you plan to participate.

Organisatorisches:

WHEN & WHERE: The course will be given online and takes place during the three weeks from Monday June 7, 2021, to Friday June 25, 2021, with lessons taking place each workday (Monday to Friday) from 09:00 (sharp) to ca. 15:30 CEST with a couple of short breaks in between and also a longer lunch break of ca. 45 minutes.

CREDITS: Certificates of participation are accepted to fulfil credit requirements of the PhD programme Behavior and Cognition as well as the GGNB programmes (for GGNB, 4.5C are given). A regular attendance is required. Students of other PhD programmes should inquire with the heads of their study programmes regarding credits.

LANGUAGE: the course language will be English.

SIGNING UP: by sending an email to statistics_teaching@dpz.eu; when registering, include your full name, affiliation, status (faculty member/PostDoc/PhD, Master) and study programme (if applicable). You can register between April 12 and May 2, 2021. People signing up later cannot be considered. Due to the priority regulations (see below), signing up does not imply that you can participate. Everyone who signed up will receive an email soon after May 2, stating whether s/he can participate.

BEFORE YOU SIGN UP: please be aware that the course requires a more or less full time commitment for three entire weeks. Please sign up only if you will be definitely able to participate (given no major unexpected events). 'No shows' and late sign-outs will have reduced priority of access in future rounds of the course; GGNB and GAUSS doctoral students will be banned from all skills and methods courses and funding options for 12 months.

PRIORITY OF ACCESS: there is a limited number of slots available, and in case more people sign up for the course than can participate, priority of access is given to first, members of the Leibniz ScienceCampus Primate Cognition, second, staff, members, and students of the University of Goettingen and the German Primate Center, and finally (third), to everyone else. Within each group priority of access is given in the order in which people have signed up. Finally, in future rounds of the course people that have signed up for this round but then signed out again or just didn't appear might get lower priority.

  • Dr. Dixon did an excellent job as an instructor. The handouts were extremely helpful and handy. I would definitely recommend this course to my peers.
  • This workshop has by far been the best I"ve ever attended as a PhD student. The trainer was extremely engaging and presented the material with such enthusiasm.

  • The workshop is exactly what is supposed to be: Training on scientific communication. The instructor was excellently prepared and was able to adapt to the audience"s needs. I would definitely recommend it to anyone working in the science field.

 Comments from former participants:

  • This 7-week long intensive online workshop increases work productivity without having to leave the work or office ecosystem. Well suited for laboratory scientists.
  • This course was very interactive, very well structured and full of lessons that make your life easier, your work more efficient and bring you closer to your goals. You need to know that it takes some commitment and time but it's totally worth it.
  • I learned the reason why I could not reach my goals in spite of hard work. The workshop showed me how to define realistic step stones towards my goals and to regain control over my own schedule, avoiding tasks that just kept me busy.
  • A very informative workshop with practical applications. You will definitely see an improvement in your productivity.
  • The Fast Forward workshop was everything I hoped for. It addressed how to manage a project and how to increase my academic productivity. It brought methodologies from the private sector world into academia and specifically ones that are prevalent start-up culture; a high uncertainty environment that in this sense is akin to research.
  • This workshop helps you implement time-management routines in your everyday life.

Bemerkung :

The course is given by Dr. Nadine Sinclair.

After more than five years of working for one of the most prestigious management consulting firms, Nadine set up her own ventures. Since then, she has been running several companies at the same time while travelling for 4-5 months every year, often asking herself what would have happened, if she had learned these skills earlier in her career when she was still in research. This program integrates her lessons and insights from the past 10 years of working with the top minds in consulting and industry, talking and listening to productivity experts and reading thousands and thousands of pages on the topic of productivity, learning and stress reduction.

Objective

Integral to voice and body training is the central idea that physical and vocal dynamics are connected to the speaker's motivation and to the importance of the information being communicated. Trainers with professional
theatre backgrounds identify the verbal challenges of each speaker, giving attention to breath, articulation,
intonation, volume, modulation and tempo. Coaching is given to improve non-verbal aspects such as gesture,
positioning, distance, eye contact and relationship with media.
Participants monitor their improvement and implement feedback with active role-play exercises in which they
present in various scenarios such as academic presentation to a large and small audience, informal meetings,
interviews and teaching situations.

Contents

  • Intensive exercises to identify vocal and physical inhibitions
  • Strengthen and release tension in the voice and body
  • Identify the dynamics between the voice and body by connecting the upper and lower hemispheres of the body
  • Make conscious vocal choices in the delivery of the presentation to communicate each idea with clarity and precision
  • Use eye contact to make points and to underline key ideas with fluid gestures
  • Explore a dynamic use of space and how to construct an architecture of ideas in the space
  • Adopt strategies to use the potential of the technical equipment and physical objects

Methods

  • Physical and vocal exercises
  • Group coaching with individual support
  • Role-play activities

Testimonials:

  • I got a lot of insights as well as straight forward, practical tips which I will be able to use in my next presentations. The workshop kept a good balance between dense input and practical exercises.
  • Julie is an enthusiastic trainer, who is fully committed to improving and supporting our presentation skills. The workshop has many useful hands-on exercises, and although the videotaping of the talk may seem scary,  it helped me a lot.
  • Offered everything I could hope for: helpful tips for real-life situations, targeted feedback about approaching live presenting. Would recommend whole-heartedly.

An occupation in research and teaching, a career in the economic or service sector or in a non-profit organisation - after the doctorate there are numerous professional fields and career paths open on the international labour market.
Because of this, strategic career planning is necessary. A series of important questions has to be answered: What are my goals and interests, what are my strengths and weaknesses? Where can I apply? Do I know what is expected of me and how to present myself?
On the basis of these questions the current application standards are conveyed and individual application strategies are worked out. With the help of selected examples from practice, the participants develop the competencies needed for a successful approach to the application process. The workshop deals in particular with the following topics:

  • My qualification profile: How do I show my potential?
  • Alma mater forever?  Possibilities within and outside academia
  • Clarification of my goals:  What exactly do I know already, what is unclear?
  • The labour market:  Desirable and realistic career pathways
  • Before the application: Strategies & stumbling blocks
  • Networking & self-marketing: Building contacts
  • Career strategies: My next steps

Comments by former participants:

  • This workshop gives some nice hands-on tips on how to step into the job market after having finished the doctorate. The trainer is friendly, direct and has a lot of expertise for the content. He included several motivating and stimulating phrases in his theoretic content.

Goal: Getting to know about professional perspectives in public and private sectors and reflecting about own suitability to different career paths; setting the direction of one`s professional future by developing specific skills during the PhD project;

What is "intercultural communication"?
Intercultural communication looks at a very few key cultural concepts (e.g. fact-based vs. relationship-based interpersonal interactions, individual vs. group orientation, the role of hierarchy, to name a few) and how these in their various constellations impact the communication behaviour of different cultures in every-day problem-solving, decision-making, project-planning, workplace interaction, etc. It is not about compiling simplified do's and don'ts checklists for specific countries.
Nor is it about coming up with the "correct" interpretation of every cross-cultural situation. In realistic, functional terms, intercultural communication skills enable one to first distinguish which problems encountered by workgroups are in fact cultural communication problems, rather than issues of individual personality or technical competence. In the case of a multicultural group, isolating and understanding the impact of key cultural issues on group dynamics puts one in a position to make a reasonable assessment of a situation and take the steps of effective action.

How do scientific and technical professionals benefit from intercultural communication skills?
The predominance of foreign students and professionals in scientific and technical programmes throughout the world means that many universities and research institutions are host to some of the most culturally diverse work teams one is likely to encounter. Within such organisations where cultural  differences can be quite pronounced and rather the norm, the effectiveness of the workgroup may well hinge on the complete skills package of certain key persons; for instance, persons working in positions where they need to influence others or co-ordinate the work of others to achieve specific objectives. Given this reality, intercultural communication skills must be more than just "something extra": they are the key to accessing the full synergistic potential within a multicultural group.

Experienced managers, engineers and other internationally active professionals consistently recognise the considerable barriers posed by cultural differences, and the challenge posed to overcome them. Given this reality, it is not inconceivable that intercultural communication awareness and skills development are equally relevant and challenging as a central issue for students of all disciplines.

How can intercultural communication skills be trained?
The models and tools delivered here are conceptualised to help start the long process the learner must undertake to construct and refine his/her own cultural model through research, experience, observation and objective analysis. The workshop, therefore, trains participants in transferring their understanding of patterns of "cultural logic" into an ability to recognise and assess reasonably accurately cultural patterns of communication behaviour, which in turn enables informed action and solutions. Using typical, authentic case studies, real-life samples for group problem-solving activities, and role-play simulations, the strength of the design of this workshop, especially with regards to professional or academic user groups, lies in its integration of the relevant academic knowledge into a solid conceptual framework that is taught with an applications-oriented approach specifically tailored to the user's needs.

Bemerkung :

The course is given by Alexia Petersen, English Communication for Professionals, Aachen.

About the trainers:
Alexia Petersen is an intercultural communication trainer from Toronto, Canada, based for the last 18 years in Germany. Together with Dr. Stephan Petersen, an engineer and manager with a company active world-wide, she consults to a wide range of companies, non-profit organisations, government and cultural institutions, and also teaches intercultural communication at the RWTH Aachen and other universities in Germany. Being good is not good enough. You also need to make sure that other people know that you are good. You only will get praise, appreciation and promotion if your environment and your boss know about your work, your efforts, your capabilities and your success stories. Therefore you need to present yourself in a convincing but also authentic way. This requires first some analysis, e.g.: what are your strengths, where do you show outstanding know-how and capabilities, what values do you stand for. Secondly,  based on this analysis you can start to develop an authentic self-presentation which you will feel comfortable with. We will discuss and train the most important rules for successful self-presentation, how to avoid negative self-presentation, how to make a good impression and how to make sure that your strengths and capabilities and your efforts are seen by your boss and environment.
The training gives you the theoretical framework for successful self-presentation but will focus on specific exercises. We will practice as well the "elevator speech" as a dialogue situation, e.g. asking your boss for something. We will look into the effects of body language and voice and language. We will also discuss what you can do in difficult situations or if somebody has stolen your ideas or your merits.
To make one thing clear: Without good work even the best self-presentation will quickly be identified as just hot air without any substance. But without good self-presentation you might be just like an uncut diamond. Good self-presentation is like cutting a diamond so that everybody can see how brilliant you are.
