This course offers an introduction to the intonational phonology based on the auto-segmentalmetrical phonological framework. The theoretical background and the techniques of prosodicannotation will be introduced with examples from familiar languages (English, German). Based onthese background, we will examine the current knowledge about the prosodic diversity of the world"slanguages. How do languages without pitch accents (like French, Korean, Turkish) express the severaldiscourse concepts with demarcating the phonological entities with edge events? Do tonal languagessuch as Chinese or Yucatec Maya use intonational means in order to express speech act (e.g.,questions) or information structure (e.g., focus)?The course participants will be offered the opportunity to create their own projects, based oncorpora of spoken data.
