In the history of English, the verb to go developed into a future marker. This is an example of a process called grammaticalization. Grammaticalization is a central, but strangely evasive concept in historical linguistics. In this course, we take a close look at this type of change and its properties. We look into adjacent phenomena such as subjectification and try to situate grammaticalization in the broader context of language change.
