The lectures will address the phenomenon of antisemitism in Eastern Europe in the longue durée, from the 18th century up to today. The theoretical insights on Antisemitism as a concept and the development of the phenomenon from the theoretical perspective will be interconnected with the region's historical developments and various case studies explained in their context. The students will thus expand their knowledge on both the general characteristics and the regional & local specificities of antisemitism. Especial attention will be drawn to the recent research on the antisemitic roots of Eastern European nationalism and the manifestation of modern antisemitism, on the one hand, and how the acknowledgement of crimes against the Jews and the commemoration of victims often become a source of tension and conflict in the East-European society, on the other.
