NOTE: attendance of a seminar on Good Scientific Practice is mandatory for all GAUSS (incl. GGNB) doctoral students!
First, we will discuss some cases of scientific misconduct and the motivation of the respective cheaters. Then, appropriate and inappropriate means of handling, processing, and displaying scientific data will be discussed (e.g. sampling and statistics, image processing), with examples of "borderline" cases being presented. Then we come to the question of proper data management and long term storage of data and to the importance of keeping lab books properly. Finally, we discuss the issue of authorships.
Finally, you will be familiarized with the rules of Good Scientific Practice enacted by various organizations (University, Max-Planck-Society, DFG) and we will discuss what to do and how to act in cases where there is suspicion or evidence for scientific misconduct. |
